***This workshop takes place during a major tourism peak in Santa Fe and may make travel and accommodation arrangements difficult. Please see the travel and accommodations section of our website for more information.

Christine Golden’s figurative sculpture is based on the narrative and psychological portrait. In this workshop, students will use slab construction to sculpt a life-size, adult human bust. Christine will demonstrate methods for creating a realistic rendering of the head and shoulders, adding arms and hands if desired. She will address anatomy, gesture and facial expression to communicate narrative. The focus will be on incorporating personal imagery, symbolic meaning and metaphorical content into the human form to create a unique and original sculpture. Options for surface treatments and firing will be discussed. Each student should arrive prepared with a personal story that they would like to illustrate through their portrait bust. Work will be bisque fired after the workshop.

Christine Golden received her BFA from the University of Utah and her MFA from Indiana University. She has participated in numerous residencies and visiting artist programs, including the LH Project, Northern Arizona University and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, ME. Her work has been published in several art books and magazines including Ceramics Monthly, Ceramic Sculpture: Making Faces, and 500 Figures in Clay. She was awarded Best of Show in the 2014 Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics Competition. She is a full-time studio artist living in AZ, exhibiting nationally and teaching workshops throughout the US.
