Tom Sather: Praying Without Words
Summer Workshop Preview 2016 April 1 - May 14, 2016
Gallery Opening Reception: Friday, April 1st, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Two shows will share the gallery space at Santa Fe Clay this April.
Santa Fe Clay will present the elegant ceramic vessels of Tom Sather in an upcoming solo exhibition Praying Without Words. Sather’s ceramic practice spans over 35 years. He created the hand formed clay vessels for this exhibition while in a state of meditation. A devoted student of Zen Buddhism, Sather’s vessels embody the very spirit of Wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic view which postulates that the beauty of a thing lies within its imperfections and impermanence. The beauty reflected in Sather’s work is that of nature. There is very little symmetry in the low-fire vessels and even less uniformity in their surface treatments. Unglazed and pit-fired, the natural clay and elemental firing process are on full display with a sublime range of earth tones.
Santa Fe Clay’s 2016 Summer Workshop Preview exhibition will showcase master ceramic artists from across the country who will be conducting summer workshops at Santa Fe Clay in 2016. The mission of our workshop program, established in 1994, honors the recognized masters in the ceramic field while also presenting younger emerging artists. Our summer workshop artists will show recent work in this exhibition, encompassing a broad range of the best in sculptural and functional ceramics being made by these internationally recognized artists. This exciting exhibition will offer an overview of these artists’ work and give a great introduction to our workshop program for new and returning students. The artists included in this show are: Peter Beasecker, Andréa Keys Connell, David Eichelberger, Adam Field, Christine Golden, Arthur Gonzalez, Lorna Meaden, Lindsay Pichaske, José Sierra, Patti Warashina.
